Track and field season is approaching fast but are the runners and coaches ready to face- off the many teams out there?
South East Track and Field season starts in February 15, 2010, but are the runners ready? “The practices are long and hard but along the way they will not get any easier,” agreed both South East High School Track and Field Coaches, David Loucel and Jairo Ramirez. This year, practice for athletes started November 30, 2009. The coaches want to make sure that this season turns out better than last year for all runners. They are preparing the runners earlier to increase their chance of winning the league.
Currently the team doesn’t have many runners, but as the season starts they hope to see
more runners out there. Coach Ramirez knows that this will be a good year for all those
individuals that are practicing hard both individually and as a team. He is sure that he will see
many improvements in the new runners as well as the returning runners. Even though the team is looking good so far in the eyes of Coach Loucel, he says, “they are not ready to compete yet, they need more practice but they will get there”. He believes that this will be a fun season and all the runners will have a great time.
Mirella Parra, a sophomore at South East High School, believes that this season will be one of her best even though she said “I’m excited but at the same time I feel very nervous”. She knows that as one of the best girls on the team, she will have to run with poise, but it is not going to be easy. Parra doesn’t think that she is prepared for competition. She feels she needs a lot more practice. These runners have a shot at being good but, their it is all in their state of
mind.
According to a Times Magazine article Usain Bolt by Sean Gregory, running is the rawest
form of athleticism: No piece of equipment can control your fate; no teammate can lift you up or slow you down. Track and field is a sport in which there is more than one event.
The running events are split between long distance and short distance. The long distance can consist of two laps and can go up to two miles. Short distance can be a lap or less.
There are also hurdles for both long and short distance. Long distance hurdles are 300 meters; this is 100 meters less of a lap. Short distance hurdles are 100 meters long which is about a straight part of the track. Field events consist of long jump, triple jump, pole vault, high jump and shot-put.
Parra said, “I know its tough but at the end it will pay off”. This year she expects to
run the 800 meter race which is 2 laps and the 4x4 relay race. The 4x4 relay race is a team race which is a lap for each rotating person. The way it set up, is that the second fastest person startsthe race. Once finished, they pass on the baton to the third fastest person, then to the slowest person. Finally, the fastest person runs. The last person is the anchor which is the person who either wins or loses the race. In this sport, you practice as a team but compete as an individual.
Both Coach Ramirez and Coach Loucel said, “We think all SEHS students should come out
to support the school’s track team because the runners represent the school and they need all the support they can get.” The runners have a long sturdy way ahead of them, but with lots of hard work, they can accomplish it all.

Texting while driving: Is it a problem?
Research shows that 26 % of mobile phone owners admit to texting while driving.
Texting has became the 21st century method of communication that many people are
becoming more aware of day by day. But is this the beginning of a problem to the drivers
on the road? Texting and driving is a dangerous mix. It can almost be compared to drunk driving according to a study, Driving Increases Crash risks 23-Fold by Jennifer Guevin. Texting
distracts drivers from the road and does not let them concentrate. David Loucel, a second year
student at Los Angeles Trade College says, “Texting and receiving texts used to help me wake
up in the morning”.
Loucel says that now that he knows the law exists, he will stop texting while driving and
he’ll turn off his phone to prevent any accidents or any tickets.
Many states have banned texting while driving. The laws punish all drivers that are caught
texting on the road. The driver will receive a ticket. Some tickets are about $200 and others can
be up to $300 and will keep increasing as the drivers keeps caught doing it . The states that have these laws are California, Illinois, Missouri, Alaska, The District of Columbia, Louisiana,
Minnesota, New Jersey, and Washington. Missouri has a specific law that only restricts texting
from drivers 21 years and younger. If teens are caught they will be fined and the tickets cost
$200.
Abigail Obeso, a freshman student at Mount Saint Mary’s College, completely agrees with
the law. She said, “This law helps prevent accidents therefore the driver can focus on their
driving.” Obeso believes that other states should implement this law for the safety of the drivers on the road and so they can protect their loved ones of any accidents.
Many drivers take this risk without knowing what can happen to them or to anyone else. They
probably are unaware that they are likely to crash while doing this. Maybe they are aware but
do not care. Carmen Montoya, a senior student at La Sierra University, said, “I have found
myself in a situation in which I almost crashed into a car while checking my phones inbox during
traffic”. She believes in the importance of using a hands free device like Bluetooth while driving.
Montoya said, “I completely agree with the law that bans texting while driving. It can help
save a few lives.” She normally will not read any messages unless she knows its
something or someone important. Montoya is very concerned for everyone’s safety on the road
therefore she has decided to use her Bluetooth, when she receives a text she calls them back, or
just simply turn off her phone while she is driving. She said, “I don’t want to be the person to
blame in an accident”.
The people that are aware of this law tend to break it. Many know the consequences but what
if an accident is to really occur? Will they be the ones to blame? The mentality of these drivers
will get them nowhere. They maybe just looking into a serious accident.
Elizabeth Serrano, a housewife and mother, has decided that for the safety of her 2 children
she will not text while driving. She says, “sometimes I do read the messages because what if
it’s something of importance ? How am I supposed to know if I can’t read it?”
Serrano does not believe people should text while driving especially those drivers that
cannot multitask. She says, “Those are the ones who are likely to crash.” Serrano explained that
to prevent any sort of accidents she will make sure to get into the habit of not texting at all while she’s on the road and hide her cell phone where she can not see it at all or hear it. She believes
that the law is there for a reason and should not be broken as it can help people gain conscience
on the road.
Studies have shown that teens get distracted much faster that any other adult while they are on the road, according to 60 % of teens text while driving by Robert Roy Britt. The state of
Tennessee has the largest percentage of texting while driving offenders in the country and it
continues to increase. The risks keep exceeding while the driver continues to do it. Five seconds
before a crash the driver is caught checking his or her phone according to, In study, Texting
Lifts Crash Risks by Large Margin by Matt Ritchel.
President Obama has restricted texting while driving for all federal employees. He (Obama)
thinks that Federal employees should be the ones to stop doing this so they can be an example to the general public. Therefore, banning texting while driving may help decrease car crashes all
over the country, and help drivers gain awareness on the road.

Cross-country Team Moves on to City Prelims
Running like the wind and winning as a team is all the Cross-country team needs to do to be the best.
Endless hours of practice and days of hard work is what the South East Cross-Country team did before going into competition. The days were long, but the practices were done. The team
went through hot and rainy days and still practiced nevertheless. Days of great struggle were
faced but the team continued working for a better race time. Although this road is finished for
all the seniors, everyone else has a long way to go.
Elysian Park was home to all the cross-country teams in the district and that’s where the
SEHS cross-country team battled it out with probably some the best teams.
They won all of their races except the one against South Gate High School. Coach Jimenez
was a bit disappointed but let it slide because he saw the effort the team put in the race and knew that there are still many races to come.
He became very proud of the runners when they won one of their toughest competitions
against Garfield High School. This is a first time win against Garfield.
When it came down to league finals everyone raced everyone. Unfortunately, the
varsity teams were not able to win because of the unexpected comebacks from some of the
teams. The coach stated, “I am very proud of all these kids they have worked hard all season
since the endings of July and 12 consecutive Saturdays.” Both the boys and girls varsity teams
have moved on to city prelims.
Coach Jimenez said that this is the second time both his girls and boys varsity teams have
moved on. The girl’s varsity team is led by sophomore Mirella Parra and the boy’s varsity team
is lead by senior Captain Jose Juarez.
The JV boy’s team has won their first league title this season and coach expressed his
excitement by saying, “I’m very excited because this is the first time the cross-country team has won a championship”. Runners feel very excited and nervous for that day. Sandra Cervantes, junior captain of the team, expressed her sadness for all the seniors that are leaving and said, “The seniors were the ones that made up the team I’m going to miss them”. Cervantes believes that everyone has worked hard and has never given up. Cervantes has stated that she will keep conditioning after the season is over in order to achieve better results next season. She believes every months of hard work have payed off.
As a captain Cervantes feels much more responsible and now her job is to encourage and
push everyone for them to succeed. Parra, the girls best varsity runner said, “I feel privileged
and very grateful with all my teammates and coach because they all have pushed me through and believed in me since the beginning”. Parra expressed her excitement and nervousness when she said. “I feel very nervous but kind of excited for Thursday” ( prelims).
She does believe that all the months of hard work have payed off. Her plans for the future in
this sport are to be very successful along with all her teammates. Even with luck the teams
destiny is uncertain.
