Running like the wind and winning as a team is all the Cross-country team needs to do to be the best.
Endless hours of practice and days of hard work is what the South East Cross-Country team did before going into competition. The days were long, but the practices were done. The team
went through hot and rainy days and still practiced nevertheless. Days of great struggle were
faced but the team continued working for a better race time. Although this road is finished for
all the seniors, everyone else has a long way to go.
Elysian Park was home to all the cross-country teams in the district and that’s where the
SEHS cross-country team battled it out with probably some the best teams.
They won all of their races except the one against South Gate High School. Coach Jimenez
was a bit disappointed but let it slide because he saw the effort the team put in the race and knew that there are still many races to come.
He became very proud of the runners when they won one of their toughest competitions
against Garfield High School. This is a first time win against Garfield.
When it came down to league finals everyone raced everyone. Unfortunately, the
varsity teams were not able to win because of the unexpected comebacks from some of the
teams. The coach stated, “I am very proud of all these kids they have worked hard all season
since the endings of July and 12 consecutive Saturdays.” Both the boys and girls varsity teams
have moved on to city prelims.
Coach Jimenez said that this is the second time both his girls and boys varsity teams have
moved on. The girl’s varsity team is led by sophomore Mirella Parra and the boy’s varsity team
is lead by senior Captain Jose Juarez.
The JV boy’s team has won their first league title this season and coach expressed his
excitement by saying, “I’m very excited because this is the first time the cross-country team has won a championship”. Runners feel very excited and nervous for that day. Sandra Cervantes, junior captain of the team, expressed her sadness for all the seniors that are leaving and said, “The seniors were the ones that made up the team I’m going to miss them”. Cervantes believes that everyone has worked hard and has never given up. Cervantes has stated that she will keep conditioning after the season is over in order to achieve better results next season. She believes every months of hard work have payed off.
As a captain Cervantes feels much more responsible and now her job is to encourage and
push everyone for them to succeed. Parra, the girls best varsity runner said, “I feel privileged
and very grateful with all my teammates and coach because they all have pushed me through and believed in me since the beginning”. Parra expressed her excitement and nervousness when she said. “I feel very nervous but kind of excited for Thursday” ( prelims).
She does believe that all the months of hard work have payed off. Her plans for the future in
this sport are to be very successful along with all her teammates. Even with luck the teams
destiny is uncertain.
